The Digital Dark Age and your Photographs: PhotoBooks

We Print On Demand
The digital dark age

The world we live in is digital, it is almost as if nothing is tangible anymore. We seem to have forgotten the value of touch. We bury ourselves in over-saturated online communities and share thousands of images online. But do we ever actually stop to remember those moments captured on camera, or do we mostly care about “likes” and “shares?” Before the smart phone and digital camera hit the market, we documented important moments through printed pictures, proudly displayed in photo albums and photobooks. Today, we definitely take more photographs, but will they last? Will your life in pictures be shared with future generations?

Photographs and documents exist as bites of information online. Our stored history runs the risk of being forever lost in the ever accelerating digital revolution. Vint Cerf, VP of Google, also regarded as one of the “Fathers of the Internet,” has stated his concern about the Digital Dark Age.

“Even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is.”

So what exactly is the digital dark age?

The Digital Dark Age speaks of a not too distant future when it will become increasingly difficult and in some cases impossible to read older electronic documents and multi-media because they have been recorded in an obsolete and obscure file format.

Vint Cerf has warned:

“We stand to lose a lot of our history. If you think about the quantity of documentation from our daily lives which is captured in digital form, like our interactions by email, peoples tweets, all of the world wide web, then if you wanted to see what was on the web in 1994 you have trouble doing that. A lot of the stuff disappears.”

We need to start preserving our digital information before it is lost in the digital realm for good.
